Day 1: Arrival in Erdobénye
Arrival in Budapest and then a train transfer to Erdobénye. Welcome meeting and inspection of bikes. Dinner in your hotel with wine.
Erdobénye is located in the so-called “Mély-patak” valley (Deep-creek valley), in a basin between the Tolcsva-Hill and the Mulató-Hill, in an extraordinary beautiful environment. Its famous for a 3,5 kilometre long cellar system under the village. A tour through the cellar system is quite fun, to be able to locate the precise street or above.
Day 2: Circular ride to Tolcsva, 16 miles (25 km)
The first day’s ride leads you to Tolcsva. which had a reputation as a wine-making place back in the 18th century. You will visit a traditional private winery with cellars over 100 years old and taste the wonderful Tokaji wine, combined with a light lunch. Arrival back to your hotel in Erdobénye early in the afternoon, there will be time for relaxing, or swimming in the open-air pool in the hotel’s yard.

Day 3: Circular ride to Bodrogkeresztúr, 22 miles (35km)
Today’s route will take you through Bodrogzug, which is located at the confluence of the River Tisza and the Bodrog spring. Nature lovers might want to visit the bird habitat in Bodrogzug. In Bodrogkeresztúr you have a visit to another traditional winery. After a tour through the cellars and vineyard, you will enjoy a wine tasting and a small snack.
Back on your bike you continue your tour back to Erdobénye.
Day 4: Erdobénye to Mád, 28 miles (45km)
Cutting through the Zemplén hills you ride through Boldogkováralja – with the medieval castle - then onto Abaújszántó, Tállya and finally Mád boasting the largest Jewish cemetery of the Hegyalja region and a Roccoco-style synagogue. Tradesmen of the former Jewish community played a crucial role in running the wine industry in Mád.
In the evening an optional visit to a private wine cellar close to the hotel can be arranged with wine tasting and cellar tour.
Day 5: Circular ride to Monok and Szerencs, 24 miles (39km)
All the small towns and villages in this region have places of interest and cultural heritage sites to welcome travellers. Lajos Kossuth, a leading figure of the Reform Age and the 1848-49 War of Independence was born in Monok, while the Rákóczi castle in Szerencs was built in the 16th century. After a short break in Szerencs, your itinerary brings you back to Mád where you can relax over dinner in your hotel.
Day 6: Circular ride to Tokaj, 23 miles (37km)
This is a special ride today via Tracal to Tokaj, the town that bears the title of the ’international town of vini- and viticulture’, lending its name to the famous Tokaji aszú. The significance of the town is further increased by the fact that Tokaj lies on trading routes, the surrounding areas being rich in fish and wild game. After a short break you will ride around Kopasz (Bald) hill and continue northwards through Bodrogkeresztúr, the town that has been inhabited since as early as 2100 B.C. The road runs back to Mád through beautiful scenery.
Day 7: Departure from Mád
After breakfast, it is the end of your holiday and time to leave for home with a transfer by train to Budapest |
