Island Hopping on the Turku Archipelago

Freedom Holiday Self Guided Grading Level 1
7 days/6 nights Price - £620pp Tour Code FI001

Cycling holiday in FinlandThe Turku archipelago are one of Finland’s most stunning natural phenomena – 20,000 islands stretching out into the sea from the city of Turku in the country’s south-west. Cycling a circular route around the main islands is made easy, and exciting, by a system of local ferry services, constantly going back and forth acting like bridges. As well as the fun of the ferries, there are also picturesque harbour villages to visit, all set against the backdrop of beautiful, unspoilt and very peaceful countryside. The tour starts and ends in Turku – the formal capital of Finland, and a bustling, attractive market town.

Daily Itinerary

Cycle in Finland - Turku harbourDay 1 Sunday: Arrive Turku.

Personal arrival to Turku, Finland’s oldest city. You can enjoy the enchanting city spirit by taking a walk along the Aura River, from the two city landmarks of the Cathedral to the Castle. Alongside the riverbank are numerous cafes and top-quality riverboat restaurants.

Day 2 Monday: Turku to Kustavi, 41 miles (65km).

In the morning your bicycles will be delivered to your hotel. In Turku enjoy a ride around the historic city with its medieval castle, cathedral, and riverside cycle paths. However you will need to be at the ferry by 3.00pm (about 45km, 4 hours riding). Continue by bike via nearby Naantali. Soon after Naantali the island-hopping begins, first with a stunning ride across the bridge to Merimasku and then take a break from peddling with a relaxing 45 minute ferry journey. Continue on by bike to your overnight hotel in the Kustavi region with a meal in a nearby restaurant

Day 3 Tuesday: Kustavi to Iniö to Houtskä to Korppoo to Nauvo, 38 miles (60km).

Today is the main island-hopping day with seven ferry journeys reaching the very heart of the archipelago region. The tiny peaceful island of Iniö is the remotest spot of the trip. Houtskär island has some of the region’s most challenging cycling, but you can rest on the half hour ferry ride to Korpoo! From Korpoo it’s a short ferry hop to Nauvo, where you stay overnight in a wonderful B&B, a former barn converted to a guest house set in a beautiful location. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Day 4 Wednesday: Nauvo island

Spending a second night on Nauvo island there are several choices of circular cycling routes, plus the possibility to go canoeing or take a traditional seaside sauna.

Day 5 Thursday: Nauvo to Rymättylä to Naantali, 28 miles (45km).

Take the ferry north from Nauvo back to the mainland and continue by bike via Rymättylä to Naantali, an idyllic seaside village with cobbled streets and old wooden houses around a bustling harbour. Overnight in a spa hotel in Naantali, with plenty of local restaurants to choose from for dinner

Day 6 Friday: Naantali to Turku, 9 miles (14km).

Short ride back to Turku giving you more time to explore this historic city. Return your bicycle.

Day 7 Saturday: Depart from Turku.

After breakfast you check out from your hotel for your homeward journey.
