The Salzkammergut, known as the country of Sound of Music, is one of the most charming regions of Austria; blue lakes, imposing mountains, green meadows and forests – a fairy tale landscape.

DachsteinYou start your tour exploring Salzburg, the town where Mozart was born, and then leave to the north through Eugendorf and St Gilgen to reach the south bank of the idyllic Wolfgangsee. A highlight of this tour is the opportunity to explore the old imperial village of Bad Ischl, home to Emperor Franz Josef and his Empress Sissi. A visit to the famous pastry shop “Zauner” is a must. On the north bank of the Traunsee you will pass through the picturesque village of Gmunden, the former imperial salt capital and now a favourite tourist spot, well known for its hand made ceramics. Attersee is the favourite lake of the region, inspiring a number of artists including the musician Gustav Mahler. Further on at Mondsee is the church that was used as a romantic backdrop for the wedding in the musical The Sound of Music. There is plenty of time to enjoy the natural beauty of the lake district and maybe visit the open air museum of Schleedorf which will transport you back to a time when farming techniques were very different. Finally you will return to Salzburg with time to explore further this festival city and enjoy a relaxing meal to round off your holiday.

Daily Itinerary
 

Day 1 Arrival in Salzburg

Located between the two mountains Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg and the River Salzach Salzburg is a picturesque city with small alleys, quaint colourful town homes, rich castles and palaces, neat gardens and a high density of churches and monasteries. Salzburg is a city whose hidden corners and romantic streets unveil new impressions time and time again.

WolfgangseeDay 2 Salzburg to Wolfgangsee 28 miles.

In the morning you will still have some time to explore the birth city of the world famous composer W.A. Mozart. Leaving the city you head north to reach the old railway tracks of the Salzkammergut railway. Cycling through Eugendorf and St. Gilgen you reach the south bank of the idyllic Wolfgangsee.

Day 3 Bad Wolfgangsee to Traunsee 26 miles.

A highlight of this tour is the opportunity to explore the old imperial village of Bad Ischl, home to Emperor Franz Josef and his Empress Sissi. A visit to the famous pastry shop “Zauner” is a must. Along the river Traun you finally reach your hotel on the Traunsee.

Day 4 Traunsee to Attersee/Attergau 30 miles.

One of the highlights of this tour is the visit to Gmunden, a picturesque village on the north bank of the Traunsee and former imperial salt capital, now well known for it´s touristic importance and it´s beautiful handmade ceramics. Now you move on to the beautiful area of Attersee

Day 5 Attersee/Attergau to Mondsee 20 miles.

Just enjoy the ride along the Attersee, the most favourite lake in the Salzkammergut region with locals and visitors alike. This lake already inspired famous artists such as the composer Gustav Mahler and the painters Gustav Klimt and Christian Ludwig Attersee. Your path continues to Mondsee and on to the village of Mondsee. Visit the church, which was used as romantic backdrop for the wedding in the musical “Sound of Music”

Day 6 Mondsee to Mattsee/Obertrum 29 miles.

On the former tracks of the “Ischler” railway you cycle to the Trumer lake district; Obertrumer See, Mattsee and Grabensee.

Day 7 Mattsee/Obertrum to Salzburg 14 miles.

There is plenty of time to enjoy nature´s beauty of the lake district and may be visit the open air museum of Schleedorf, where you get some information about the traditional farming culture of the region. After a short cycle ride you reach again the festival city of Salzburg.

Day 8 Depart Salzburg.

It is the end of the holiday so time to make your way home
