Day 1: Arrival in St Micahel in Lungau.
Personal welcome and tour information, distribution of rental bicycles. St Michael used to be a miner’s settlement from the 12th century.
If you want to cycle from the source of the Mur you will need to book an extra night in St Michael. Details on request.
Day 2: St. Michael to Murau, 34 miles (55 km).
First stop is Tamsweg with an historic market square and a pilgrim church to St. Leonhard. The day ends in Murau, a medieval brewery town with a brewery museum and Obermurau castle.
Day 3: Murau to Judenburg / surroundings, 41 miles (65 km).
The valley of the river Mur narrows as you cycle through it with the steep, green Niedere Tauern mountains rising to your left and right. Highlights of the day are a railway museum, ruins of the medieval Frauenburg fortress, and finally Judenburg with its medieval city tower, ancient fortress and old town houses.
Day 4: Judenburg / surroundings to Bruck a. d. Mur / Oberaich, 37 miles (60 km).
Now you reach the once important industrial area of Austria with its well kept old towns and interesting museums. Highlights include Maria Buch (pilgrim church) and Seckau monastery (Benedictine abbey) and Göss monastery and Brewery in Leoben. Overnight in Bruck an der Mur with its medieval merchant house and town hall or in a hotel not far from Bruck.
Day 5: Bruck a. d. Mur / Oberaich to Graz, 37 miles (60 km).
Cycle through river meadows and green farmland to Frohnleiten with its flower park, medieval town square and “gossiping women’s fountain”. Continuing through beautiful countryside you reach the old town of Graz, the capital of Styria, whose architecture was strongly influenced by Italian neighbours. Enjoy a warm evening, sitting in one of the many street cafés and restaurants.
Day 6: Graz via Mureck to Bad Radkersburg, 56 miles (90 km).
From Graz you cycle alongside the river Mur to Mureck where you can see the church, town hall and the unique river-mill. Castle Obermureck in neighbouring Slovenia is well worth an excursion. A final short trip of 25 km takes you to the spa town of Bad Radkersburg, an historic old town with many different architectural styles.
Day 7: Departure from Bad Radkersburg.
Make your way back to Graz or Salzburg.
